Mother 3 Plot
Lucas Biography

AU History: Lucas's family were Rangers who lived a short ways out from Union in the forests, acting as caretakers for that region and studying and collecting data on the native wildlife in that area. They had made some progress towards domesticating some of the Pokemon in the area, and they lived a relatively quiet existence for most of Lucas's life, until one day when he was 10. Then the inexplicable happened - the forest caught fire, Lucas's mother, Hinawa, was killed by a strange rampaging Pokemon, his twin brother vanished, never to be found, and his father left Lucas to go search for his twin after dropping him off in Union with his grandfather. He never returned.

During his time of grief, Lucas suddenly manifested his abilities as an Enlightened, developing extremely potent psychic healing abilities, stemming from his feelings of weakness and powerlessness and his inability to protect those closest to him. At the age of thirteen, he was granted his request to begin work at the Medical Center in lieu of some of his afternoon classes, as the track he was destined to take was relatively obvious. He remains with his grandfather (his mother's father), who has no particular abilities other than being an expert at weaponizing crotchety insults.

Canon Personality: In his original canon, Lucas starts off the game as a ten year old child, the younger of two twin boys. He is described as gentle and kind when the player is taken to the naming screen; in contrast, his older twin, named Claus, is called energetic. This persists throughout the majority of the first three chapters of the story. When Hinawa, his mother, is killed by a Drago, Lucas spends most of his time in his room crying; Claus, in contrast, breaks their father, Flint, out of prison and goes after the creature that killed Hinawa. After Claus subsequently goes missing, Lucas continues to cry, and even the game names him as a weakling. A crybaby. Too attached to his mother and too pitiful to do anything else.

Then... in spite of this... because of this... Lucas resolves to change. He can no longer sit by and watch his family and his friends destroyed. As several of the other heroic characters of the game begin to get involved in trouble with the Pigmask Army, the ones who had incited the Drago to kill his mother to begin with, Lucas suddenly appears to come to their aid. With a whistle, he calls forth a tame Drago to attack, destroying the tanks of the Pigmask Army and sending them fleeing in terror. This is when he first begins to understand what it means to be a hero.

Three years pass. Asked by Wes, an elderly man, to protect the village, Lucas has watched as greed, selfishness, and strife have corrupted his home in the form of the money and the Happy Boxes introduced by a central antagonist, Fassad, and the Pigmask Army. Over this period of time, he has grown to become its protector and a stalwart defender of the remnants of the innocence of his youth, refusing to accept the corrupt message preached by the Pigmask Army. He has become brave, willing to stand up for his beliefs and morals while the other villagers easily succumb to the flashy and entertaining lifestyle promised by the Army. Some of them have even joined the Pigmasks themselves. Most importantly, he has learned to care for himself – Flint continues to search for Claus in the mountains daily, leaving Lucas to care for the farm and to survive on his own.

This new Lucas is a hero. His character becomes more difficult to define at this point as he becomes a silent protagonist and his movements are largely determined by the player. However, his personality traits are clearly made known, as the game provides flashes of insight into his thoughts. ‘“I want to be strong.” This is what Lucas truly feels in his heart.’ As the game continues, Lucas unswervingly infiltrates the Pigmask Army, faces the Ultimate Chimera, a literally undefeatable enemy, several times, confronts the mastermind, Porky, and pulls the Seven Needles to summon the Dark Dragon. The last act takes an unbelievable amount of courage: pulling the Seventh Needle means the destruction of the entire world. But he knows there is no other choice. Near the end of the game, an NPC tells Lucas, “You’re his [Flint’s] solace. You’ve grown up to be a strong young man. One that your father doesn’t have to worry about. You’re a good son.” When he drinks of the coffee of the Mr. Saturns, an enigmatic race, he hears this message from the world: “If you didn’t get strong, you wouldn’t be able to help those in need. This is why you have become strong.”

But through all of his struggles, Lucas never loses his kind and gentle heart. And by no means does he ever fully conquer the shyness and hesitance of his childhood. In the final battle of the game against the Masked Man, it is revealed that this antagonist is in actuality Lucas’s twin brother, Claus, who was killed years before and reconstructed by Porky as a chimera. Throughout the entire fight, Lucas does not lift a finger against his brother, believing and trusting that Claus would regain his senses despite knowing the Masked Man to have died long ago. “You should believe in others. You should keep moving towards that light in front of you, no matter how small it look. Forget the darkness. Turn your face towards the light.” In the end, Lucas never stops believing in the goodness of others, no matter how many times they turn on him, ridicule him, oppose him, or even attack him. He even agrees with Prof. Andonuts when the latter says that Porky was truly someone to be pitied rather than despised...

Mother 3, like its predecessors, is the story of a mother’s influence on her children. It is the story of a boy who, in the absence of a mother, was forced to become strong or else to die. It is the story of a boy on the verge of manhood who has been forgotten by his father and is guided solely by the memories of a beloved person long departed. It is the story of a boy who carries too much of his mother’s gentle heart - and yet because of this, he is able to stand tall when exposed to the true nature of the world: corrupt, selfish, evil. The people of Tazmily sought to protect themselves by erasing their memories of the sins of their past. Their protégé, Lucas, protects himself by resolving to change what he cannot accept. The world is beautiful. It cannot be beyond redemption. Always and forever, there will be a way. In the end, it is his love for the world that drives his journey, his faith in its people that gives him strength, and his hope in the future that allows a new one to come to pass.

AU Deviation: Due to the fact that Flint is not actively disappointing Lucas, but rather, simply disappearing into the wilderness, he does not bear as much of a psychological wound from the absence of his father in his life. He maintains hope and patiently awaits his father to return home from his long journey, and though he does not truly expect his father to come back with Claus in tow, he will wait nonetheless. Additionally, as the people of Union are also more inoculated against such tragedies, the death and loss of his entire family was less of a blow to him as well. It is less that he is alright with what happened more than that he realizes the world they live in is extremely dangerous, and death truly could come at any time. As a result of this, Lucas is a little more worldly and wise than his canon incarnation, being slightly less naive and slightly more practical in his ways.

Lucas feels no need to go out into the world at the moment, unlike his canon counterpart. The call to adventure hasn't come; he isn't the designated Savior of his world, and as a result, he feels content with his current role - as a medic who treats those who are injured on a day to day basis. He will require more persuasion to use his abilities to actively aid those who seek out adventure as Rangers, or simply, he will need to make acquaintances and friends who actively do so. Once he becomes concerned for them, he'll be much more willing to go outside Union. On his own, Lucas is more willing to be passive about these matters.

Canon Abilities:
Lifeup (α, β, ɣ, Ω): Lucas is able to fully heal a target of any injury or a large group of allies for slightly lesser recovery.
Healing (α, β, ɣ, Ω): Lucas is able to heal eye damage, confusion, parasite infestation, amnesia, nausea, paralysis, poison, and unnaturally induced sleep. Healing ɣ can restore an ally from complete incapacitation, or a state of near-death. Healing Ω does the same for a large group of allies.
Defense Up (α, Ω): Lucas can enhance the resilience of his allies to greatly increase their innate defense.
Offense Up (α, Ω): Lucas can enhance the strength of his allies to greatly increase their innate offense.
Shield (α, Ω): Lucas can form a shield around his allies to halve damage from three physical attacks.
Counter (α, Ω): Lucas can create a reflective barrier around his allies to return half-damage from three physical attacks back to the assailant.
PSI Shield (α, Ω): Lucas can form a psychic shield around his allies to halve damage from three non-physical attacks.
PSI Counter (α, Ω): Lucas can create a psychic aura around his allies to return half-damage from three non-physical attacks back to the assailant.
Refresh: Lucas's ultimate healing PSI power, a wide-ranging, target-all PSI that restores injuries constantly over time and restores energy.
PK Flash: Lucas can excite photons to create a green flash of light that alters the neurochemistry of anyone who views it. For normal humans without defenses, 60% of the time, the target will uncontrollably cry, becoming effectively blind. 15% of the time, the target will become paralyzed. 10% of the time, the target will become confused and delusional. 10% of the time, the target will simply die. 5% of the time, nothing happens.
PK Love (α, β, ɣ, Ω): The most powerful PSI power that only Lucas and Claus can learn. Connected to the Seven Needles that held the Dragon of Darkness in slumber, PK Love is an inexplicable attack channeled by the force of love within Lucas's heart.
General PSI Manifestation: Lucas can use his psychic power to jump higher and to lift heavier things than normal. He can also release PSI shocks from his hands and feet to attack.
Telepathy: Lucas is able to communicate with animals and spirits.

Enlightened Abilities: Lucas will be a Psychic/Normal Enlightened and will have the special skill of Child of the Verdant Forest.

Lucas will begin by being able to heal minor wounds, create flashes of light, and create weak psy-blasts with his psychic abilities. He'll progress by gaining most of his canon powers, with some limitations on the extent to which he can heal. PK Love, as his only psychic attack, will be restricted heavily, and his offensive psychic powers will be lacking until his evolutions. The telepathy will be covered by the abilities inherent to Child of the Verdant Forest.

For his first 'evolution', Lucas will receive a minor boost to his offensive technique and will be able to use his abilities up to the gamma stage.

For his second 'evolution', Lucas will receive a significant boost to his offensive technique and will be able to use his abilities on whole groups of people rather than just one. His abilities will be equivalent to the omega stage.

Lucas will have the Enhanced Item of an old toy yo-yo that will strangely be able to dance and weave through the air as if he were controlling it with telekinesis. His other main weapon will be a stick with no special abilities.

Starter Pokémon: Eevee

First-Person: BNW Testrun Sample.

Third-Person:
There had been a particularly disastrous campaign earlier this morning. He had arrived from his lessons after lunch and had walked straight into a disaster scene - five Rangers being wheeled into surgery and their Pokémon, five each, in various states of injury. The lightest wounds were on a Gloom, who had suffered nothing worse than a bite out of its flower; it would grow back of its own accord. In contrast, the words 'on the brink' and 'doing all we can' were bandied about in regards to a Swellow, whose wings, apparently, had nearly been severed.

He clutches his own Pokémon a little more tightly as the doctors and nurses rush about the room, heedless of their in-training intern. He is cautious enough to stay out of the way in a corner; Eevee paws at his face as his breathing comes a little more heavily, his eyes darting from patient to patient, trying to avoid staring at blood splatters or missing limbs for too long. His gaze falls on a man in a white coat bent over a Hoppip just as a voice yells from down the hall.

"Thoreaux! We need you in ICU Room 4; we've got a Swadloon in shock, and no one else knows what to do with something that's half-plant! Get in here ASAP!"

"...Damn."

The man stands, and it is evident that the Hoppip has suffered something like a stab wound to its torso; something dark brown and thick is oozing out. ...Before he can even properly react, Lucas hears his own voice coming out of his mouth.

"I... I can keep it stable. You should go." And as the man glances at him with a skeptical expression, he tosses out a few more words. "I've seen this a lot. I used to live in the forest. Hoppip... Hoppip are mostly just air, so what it's losing now is... It must be what it ate, right? So it's stomach pouch has been damaged. I can keep it under control."

The doctor only arches an eyebrow before hurriedly stepping down the hall in the direction of the shout; Lucas takes this as a sign to hurry forward to the injured Pokémon.

It was his determined path in life to be a medic. To protect and restore what he cared about... that was his role.
