[There is fumbling on the phone line for a few seconds and a bit of hesitant breathing, as if the speaker isn't sure whether or not he should say what he's about to say. When he finally gets the words out, though, they are spoken firmly, with confidence.]

I believe him.

I'm not going to ask anyone else to, but . . . I do. I don't think for a second that he can really get us out of here, but I think he's trying to help us. It's not out of selflessness or anything -- There's some reason we can't understand . . . If it makes sense, though, I think . . . I think whatever he's after, it's better for him if we escape than if we stay. It's not for our sake. But I believe him.

We've fought so hard for so long. So when somebody offers to help us for the first time . . . If we just refuse and say it's a trick to hurt us even more -- Isn't that a victory for them, too? We've all been hurt so deeply that our first reaction is to be afraid. . . . I don't want to become like that. I don't want to become someone who's bitter and frightened and always suspicious. I understand -- I'm naive, and I'm stupid. But I've gotten as far as I have by believing in the good of people, and I won't let Mayfield take that away from me.

. . . He said something to me. 'Keep on keeping on'. . . .

[He's chosen the people he wants to speak with carefully. There are so many people he loves and cares for in this place, but . . . He needs a certain type of person for this. And after carefully considering for another few moments, Lucas slowly and deliberately filters away from his mother. There are some things he doesn't want her to know.]

I have something to show you. It might not be a good time now -- When all of this is over, though, I'd like to ask you to come over when you can. Thanks.

Right then, I'll be right over. [A pause.] And um, yes, I'm feeling much better now.

You, um. Well, alcohol's a poison, so. I guess if you drink too much again, I can . . . try to help?

I...thanks Lucas, but I don't think I'll be trying anything like that again for a very very long time.

[You can almost hear the shame on the other end of the line.]

Anyway, I'll be heading over now.

I-It's alright, Luke. It wasn't really your fault.

[A little while later, there's knocking at the door.]

[And it opens! Lucas gestures Luke in and smiles.]

You're looking better, too. Can I get you something to drink?

[Luke enters, smiling back.]

Ah, I'm not thirsty but thanks!

Alright. Do you mind coming upstairs with me, then?

[As Lucas begins to go up, he turns back and begins to try to explain.]

Um. The thing I wanted to show you . . . You remember who Mr. Netherlands is, right?

Not at all!

[Luke starts to follow behind Lucas.]

Mm, I believe you've mentioned him a few times before.

. . . Just a few.

[Lucas smiles a little before turning around to continue.]

And you remember that time the pharmacy was set on fire because people were trying to get Jane Smith to remember being Samantha Achewood. That was him.

Ah! Yes, I heard about that. He was pretty brave to try something like that, huh?

[Luke smiles a little himself before continuing to follow Lucas.]

[And they're in his room and Lucas is pulling something out from beneath his bed.]

Yeah. He was.

And . . . Well. It's easier if you look.

[It is a box filled with notes and papers about the Netherlands's meeting with Jane Smith. Nothing particularly interesting happened, but he has indicated that he wants to try and shake her back into being Samantha Achewood again in the near future before they cut off.]

[And it reads through them all, examining them for any kinds of clues or hints.]

Lucas, what do you plan to do with all these notes?

I'm keeping them. Mr. Netherlands left them to me in case he left. So . . . in case I leave, I'm showing you.

And maybe . . . Maybe I'll follow up on it.

In case you...

[He stops, shaking his head for a moment.]

I'll help you, this isn't something you should have to do on your own.

R-Really? Are you sure? It's definitely going to be dangerous. And, you know . . . I don't even know if Jane will want to talk to children at all.

I'm positive, and I'm perfectly aware of how dangerous it is. And I'm not sure if Jane will want to talk to us either but, we won't know unless we try.
